Medical Officer

RFDS Medical Officers are highly skilled professionals who provide optimal health care services to people throughout Queensland. A Medical Officer with the RFDS has many challenging, varied and interesting work experiences. Medical Officers work out of Mount Isa, Cairns and Charleville. Roles are usually live in or possible fly in-flyout opportunities for Mount Isa and Charleville.

A Medical Officer with the RFDS has many challenging, varied and interesting work experiences.

The two main services the RFDS provides are:

  • Aeromedical and Emergency Services (emergency and aeromedical retrievals, low dependency to critical care inter-hospital transfers and tele-health (medical advice via remote consultations)).
  • Primary Health Care Services (allied health services, child health and immunisation clinics, general practice, health promotion including field days, indigenous health, mental health services, primary health care clinics and women’s health clinics).

The current mandatory minimum requirements for Medical Officer credentialing and scope of clinical practice are as follows:

  • Qualifications in Medicine
  • Registration or eligibility to be registered as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA (Medical Board of Australia)
  • A minimum of five years post graduate experience
  • General Practice or Primary Health Care (for Primary Health Care roles)
  • 6 months Anaesthetic experience (for Aeromedical roles)
  • ICU Experience would be advantageous (for Aeromedical roles)
  • Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)

Fellowship in General Practice Fellowship (FRACGP, FACRRM for primary health care roles) or a Critical Care Speciality (FACEM, FANZCA, FCICM, with advance critical care qualifications for Aeromedical roles) is highly regarded.  It is essential that you are registered or have the ability to be registered with AHPRA (Medical Board of Australia).

To ensure the RFDS provides safe and high-quality care to our patients, we have developed a very robust credentialing process. This system ensures that we employ Clinicians who are suitably qualified to practice safely and competently, often working in rural and remote settings. We ensure that all Clinicians who have patient contact are credentialed before they commence work.

The credentialing process is online via CGOV. Candidates will be asked to fill out a comprehensive online form including information around work experience, education information, and continuing professional development. Evidence of qualifications will need to be provided in the form of original certified copies of qualifications.
